Open to All Classrooms Across the Country at No-Cost, This Virtual Experience Will Introduce Students to Different NBA Professionals and Their Respective Career Journeys

Silver Spring, Md. (January 28, 2020) – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Discovery Education – the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms – invites students and teachers nationwide to participate in NBA Storytellers: An All-Star Virtual Field Trip on February 13 at 1:00 PM EST. Through this exciting no-cost virtual experience, participants will learn from an NBA player, league representatives, and team professionals about the types of career paths offered through the NBA.

Set in the NBA  Replay Center in Secaucus, NJ and at the United Center in Chicago, IL, the site of the NBA All-Star 2020, this Virtual Field Trip introduces students to a variety of NBA professionals whose careers are helping a global audience connect with one another and enjoy the game of basketball. Through each of these individuals’ personal stories, participants will learn about a variety of career paths that use the creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills to tell the story of one of the world’s fastest growing sports.

To register your classroom for this event and to receive resources supporting this virtual experience, visit the NBA Storytellers: An All-Star Virtual Field Trip registration page.

Basketball Broadcaster Rosalyn Gold-Onwude will host the event and introduce each storyteller to students. Participants will include:

Ryan Arcidiacono, Chicago Bulls Guard, who will share how NBA players can be storytellers, the most influential people in his story so far, and the important lessons he has learned along the way.

Mike CallahanNBA Senior Manager, Digital Product Management, who will explain how the league uses data to innovate and inform the direction of the NBA’s digital products to reach a global audience.

Luka Dukich, Chicago Bulls Director of Digital Content, who will discuss his role and the ever-changing digital landscape, the power of creative collaboration, and the importance of taking pride in the stories you put into the world.

Michelle Farsi, NBA Photographer, who will share how she turned her passion into a career and explain the unique ways she tells stories from behind the lens.

John Hareas, NBA Vice President of Editorial & Daily Content Management, who will discuss his 24-year career inspiring audiences as both a preserver of the NBA’s past and a content creator for its future.

Michelle McComas, Chicago Bulls, Senior Director of Entertainment and Events, who will talk about how she combined her three passions – dance, business, and basketball – into a career path with perseverance and determination.

“Through storytelling, we are able to provide a broader insight of the types of careers that exist beyond the court,” said NBA Senior Vice President, Social Responsibility Todd Jacobson.  “We hope NBA Storytellers: An All-Star Virtual Field Trip helps to inspire and encourage students to learn what is possible as they work towards their futures.”

“One of my biggest challenges is connecting what I am teaching and what students are learning in the classroom to possible careers students can pursue after graduation,” said Courtney Warlick, Resource Teacher, Blended Teaching and Learning,  Baltimore County Public Schools.  “Virtual experiences like this help me bridge the gap between the classroom and students’ futures by introducing them to a world of possible careers they might not even know exist.”

NBA Storytellers: An All-Star Virtual Field Trip will be added to Discovery Education digital services, where teachers and students will be able to view it on-demand in the Basketball Across the Curriculum content channel.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner once again with the NBA to bring this exciting event to classrooms,” said Discovery Education President of K-12 Education Scott Kinney.  “This type of experience, which connects possible career paths beyond graduation to classroom learning, challenges students to think about their future beyond graduation.  We invite all educators to join us for this exciting experience.”
